Do you have a Roof Leak? Here is how and why they happen. Climbing on your roof to try and find a leak as soon as it happens is something that could put you in the hospital. Dragging out your ladder just to climb on your roof during a thunderstorm is not the ideal way to find a leak. Trying to temporarily fix a leak could be highly dangerous. If you want to do it right, there is no quick-fix.  You should hire a professional to accurately find and fix your leaking roof.  Contact Handyman Roofing today by calling (727) 577-2468 or by filling out our FREE Estimate form by clicking here: http://www.handymanroofing.com/quote/

 Keep Gutters Clean

One of the most common causes for roof leaks are clogged gutters. Gutters that have not been cleaned can cause the water to build up during rain, and “overflow” under the shingles, tiles or flashings of your roof.  Gone untreated it can cause damage not only to your roof but also your walls which will result in unwanted repairs and expenses.

Avoid Dry Rot

Dry rot isn’t related to any type of water damage, but lack of ventilation. If a roof leak is in the middle of the roof, there is a good chance that the plywood might be deteriorating. The roof will actually sag in and cause the roof shingles to get brittle, crack and then leak. Living in Florida we also know that Termites play a major role in the destruction of wood, once you have contacted the exterminators, contact the professionals at Handyman Roofing for your roof inspection!

Leaks in the Ridge & Valleys

A valley is where the intersection of two roofs comes together. It is also called the ridge, which is again where two roofs meet at the top. Valleys are very common places for leaks because that’s where the water from the entire roof goes to and it will start sloshing back and forth.

Spotting potential trouble

Once every year, have your roof inspected by Certified Roofing Contractors. Here at Handyman Roofing, our Professionals will look for signs of wear including shingles that are cracked, broken, curled and missing; rust spots on your flashings; moss and lichen growth; and any discoloration and peeling paint under eaves.

To help insure any unwanted leaks, it is important to pay special attention to any branches that are touching or within five feet of your roof. In stiff winds even branches that are several feet from your house can rub against the roof, brushing away the protective layers, lifting shingles or even puncturing the roof itself. Trim back all branches.

Inside the house, look for dark spots on ceilings and walls – sure signs that moisture is entering your home and that your roof may have a leak.
